Jane on the go!

Next month will be my busy month traveling for me! I have plans to go to China for 4 days and then go to Singapore for 3 days... and then I will be back home really broke!

I'm still planning for my Singapore trip, anyone has suggestion for me? Which hotel should I stay (budget less than 100 $US)? Which area should I stay? Which food or restaurant should I try? -- I'm sure PY would be the best source for this!!!

Just a quick update! I'm at work now... gotta get back to work! sigh...

I have a personal liking for Bugis and Kampong Glam area. This area is about 15 minutes bus-ride to Orchard Road where the Thai embassy is located. The nice part of it is that it is near Bugis MRT station, and it is within walking distance from the museums. There are also some nice food area and I love Kampong Glam area.

I suppose Jeremy might be interested in Southeast Asian culture and Buddhism

Here are some places that Jeremy and yourself may wish to consider checking out:

Asian Civilisation Museum (Empress Place) (Please note that you should also check out the exhibitions on the third level of this museum. Most people miss it out. On the third level, it features the Southeast Asian performing art, and you will get to see a gamelan ensemble exhibit, and find out more about it.)

Nei Xue Tang - A Buddhist Art Museum

For an appreciation of the Malay and Muslim community, visit the area nearby the Malay Heritage Centre. If you visit the Sultan Mosque (largest mosque in Singapore) during its visiting hours, you can even enter the mosque. There are robes for free rental so that you can enter the mosque with the appropriate clothing.

If time permits, you could consider:
Images of Singapore at Sentosa.

Or simply visit the National Museum of Singapore (near your hotel). There'll be free admission to the Living Galleries from 6 - 9 p.m. everyday. But if you want to visit the History Galleries to get a glimpse of Singapore's history, you have to do so in the day-time.

Within walking distance (within 15 min) from your hotel is the Singapore River. It is quite a nice place to walk about, especially if you have a map with you. Let me see if I could get you a walking guide of the area.

Then if you don't mind walking further, you will get to Chinatown (about another 10 minutes from the mouth of Singapore River). Then to return to the hotel, you can take a bus, or the MRT.

By the way, if you are near Royal Thai Embassy, Singapore, and have some time while waiting for the visa application to be done, other than shopping along Orchard Road, if you have time and you are interested, you could ask for directions to travel to the Singapore Botanic Gardens. It is about 15 minutes stroll away.

There is a Borders bookshop within 5 minutes from the Royal Thai Embassy, if you need to get books.

Garden and books sounds great! Yeah! I need some books in Singapore! Thanks for the tips!

By the way, the Singapore Art Museum, which is within 5 minutes from your hotel, has free admission from 12 - 2 p.m. every weekeday.

There is an exhibiition at the Singapore Art Museum named Widayat Between Worlds: A Retrospective exhibition (13 Sep - 28 Oct). Widayat is an Indonesian artist.

By the way, also within walking distance from Royal Thai Embassy is the Ngee Ann City shopping mall. There is a Kinokinuya mega bookstore in the mall, on the 3rd floor. So you have two mega bookstores to choose from. :)
